Student Policies

Attendance

All students are expected to attend class regularly. In case of illness or other reasonable absence, we ask that the Student please notify 105degrees before the start of the Student’s class session for the day, from which the Student will be absent or will be arriving late.

Arrival Time

All students should arrive promptly for all class sessions. A tone for the day is established upon arrival. Students may not be allowed into class if more than ten minutes late.

Inclement Weather

The 105degrees Academy will hold classes whenever possible. When we close due to weather conditions, the Academy Director or designated person will call the local broadcast television stations and announce our closing as early as possible. 105degrees will then post the closing online at 105degreesAcademy.com

Missed Work

A Student may request a make-up session for missed work, which the Student’s instructor may, in his or her sole discretion, schedule based upon availability and necessity. There may be a make-up fee assessed to cover the cost of the instructor’s time and of the replacement supplies. In the event that a Chef Certification Student misses 25% or more of the contact hours of the entire course in which he or she is enrolled, the Student may not satisfactorily complete the course unless and until the Student has made up missed work in a manner approved in advance in writing by 105degrees, which may include attendance of future sessions and/or private make-up sessions. In such case, the Student may not be certified as a graduate of such course unless and until the missed work is completed, and the Student receives a passing grade.

Professional Attire

Students must at all times during the course be dressed in appropriate student chef attire. For chef certification students, appropriate attire includes (1) student uniform, as detailed in the Course Catalog Addendum, worn at all times; (2) hair pulled back under required head gear; (3) clean and fresh uniform at the beginning of each class session; (4) aprons worn with uniform; (5) undershirt to wear to and from class; chef coat shall not be worn outside of the classroom or the kitchen; and (6) no jewelry, including wedding ring or bands. For public culinary instruction students, appropriate attire includes (1) comfortable clothing; and (2) closed toe shoes.

Leave of Absence

A Chef Certification Student may take a leave of absence from the course in which he or she is enrolled for up to one year by submitting in writing a request to the Academy Director. If the Students fails to return the program at the end of the leave of absence, he or she will be dismissed from the course. Due to changing industry requirements and revisions to the program, a Student who takes a leave of absence and desires to return after the end of the leave of absence must re-enroll according to our enrollment procedures.

Nondiscrimination

105degrees admits students of any race, color, religion, or national and ethnic origin. 105degrees does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies and other school-administered activities.

Required Student Progress

Our Chef Certification Courses include both written and practical tests, which are graded on a pass/fail basis. In order to attain certification from our Academy, a Student must earn an overall passing grade in the course in which the Student is enrolled by performing at a level which demonstrates the skills necessary to represent the standards expected of a beginning level (for 105degrees Fundamental Living Cuisine Certification) or advanced level (for 105degrees Advanced Living Cuisine Certification) chef working within a professional organization.

Student Conduct

Attention to a professional atmosphere and conduct is required by all students at all times. Students will be dismissed for inappropriate behavior, criminal activity, or drug or alcohol use. Students may be asked to submit to a drug or alcohol test if use of these substances is suspected. Refusal to submit to such test shall constitute an admission of use of drugs and alcohol for purposes of this provision. Students must treat others with respect. This includes respecting their property, privacy, and space. Words that are profane, sexually explicit, or inflammatory undermine the creation of a polite, respectful, safe environment. Students are expected to use appropriate language in speaking and in writing. Students are expected to follow directions given by any faculty or staff member. Disruptive behavior interferes with the learning of others. Proper care of all school property is expected. Damaged items will be paid for by the student responsible for the damage.

Student Meals

Chef certification student meals and drinks during class hours will be purchased by students from the 105degrees Cafe menu at a discounted student rate. Students may not bring food or drinks from outside of 105degrees onto the premises. Students may not prepare meals for consumption using 105degrees supplies and ingredients, except to the extent that such meal preparation is part of the planned course curriculum at that time and date. Students who violate this policy are subject to dismissal and are required to reimburse 105degrees for food used and/or consumed inappropriately.

Health & Sanitation

To maintain a sanitary school environment and proper food handling and safety procedures, students must adhere to the following health and sanitation rules: (1) clean hands upon entry into 105degrees and upon the beginning of new tasks; (2) fingernail length short, no false fingernails, and no nail polish; (3) single-use disposable gloves and bandage worn when wounded; (4) prior to entering the 105degrees premises, students must observe and maintain generally accepted professional and health standards of personal grooming and hygiene; (5) no smoking, chewing gum, or tobacco at any time at 105degrees; (6) drinking water in a paper cup with lid and straw is the only drink allowed during class hours; (7) no outside food or drink is allowed; (8) eating is only allowed during class hours during designated times and certain locations; (9) no students with fever or other illness allowed in 105degrees; (10) no students with jaundice allowed in 105degrees; must be cleared and released by a medical practitioner; and (11) no students diagnosed with Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, Hepatitis A, or Norovirus, unless approved clean by a medical practitioner and local regulatory for release.

Dismissal

Students must comply with the policies, rules, and regulations of 105degrees, as stated on 105degreesAcademy.com, in the Course Catalog, and as otherwise may be posted or provided. The Student’s enrollment and attendance at 105degrees are conditioned on compliance with such policies, rules, and regulations by the Student. 105degrees may dismiss the Student, withdraw an offer of enrollment, or decline to re-enroll the Student, if in the sole judgment of 105degrees the Student’s conduct, influence, industry or progress is unsatisfactory. In the event of dismissal, the Student remains obligated to pay tuition and fees, for the course or class in which he or she is enrolled as provided in our policy governing Refunds.

Cancellation/Refunds

A chef certification student may cancel his or her enrollment by giving WRITTEN notice to 105degrees of such cancellation by certified mail at P.O. Box 60886, Oklahoma City, OK 73146. Neither a request for records nor nonpayment constitutes written notice of cancellation. Failure to provide such notice in writing as required will result in a $25 Cancellation Penalty. In cases of cancellation or dismissal of a public culinary instruction student, 105degrees shall not refund monies paid to it by the student. In cases of cancellation or dismissal of a chef certification student, 105degrees will refund monies paid to it by the student as set forth in the Course Catalog within 30 days after cancellation or dismissal.
